Gebruder Ohlhaver German Composition Doll, 17 inch German Bisque Head Doll, c20s

A 17 inch, five piece composition body and bisque head German toddler doll with sleep eyes by Gebruder Ohlhaver offered by Snowdrift Antiques. Gebrüder Ohlhaver Dolls was founded by brothers in 1912 in Sonneberg, Germany. Gebrüder Ohlhaver sold child toddler character dolls, bent limb baby dolls and Dolly Face dolls ranging from 8 to 28″ tall with jointed composition or kid bodies, of which all are very good quality. They produced their dolls for a relatively short time, ending in 1928. Curiously, the brothers created their famous trademark “Revalo”, which is their last name (Ohlhaver) spelled backwards phonetically with the silent Hs missing. The bisque doll heads came from several manufacturers. This particular head was made by Carl Harmus Porzellanfabrik Mengersgereuth, as evidence by the “X” in a circle, at an angle making look like a “+”. This doll is a beautiful 5 piece toddler composition doll in very good condition. She is mold 22-7 as seen incised on the back of the head. Her body may have been repainted long ago but has been as is while in our collection since 1989. All of her fingers are intact with some paint chips to the tips of most of them. They left pinky may have been repaired as it is a little rough, but it is difficult to tell. The bisque head is in good condition. There is a firing crack on the rim of the pate opening in back which extends down the back of her head as a hairline from the “G” in Germany to the center of the Revalo circle. There is also a firing bubble in the circle. All of this is covered by her wig. The facial painting is very pretty but there are subtle rubs to the blush on each cheek and to the flesh tone on the tip of her nose as well as a very small rub to her right upper lip. She has blue sleep eyes which work well. Her hair eyelashes are a little thin. She has two teeth and a tongue visible through her open mouth. Her light blond mohair wig and pate are replacements. Her hair style is adorable with bangs and short curls that frame her face. The wig is no longer glued on, it is securely held in place with a tacky putty. She wears a sweet white cotton dress with embroidery down the front in shades of blue. It is not original to the doll. She has on white cotton panties which are also replacements. On her feet she wears vintage off-white knit socks and white leather shoes which show typical age discoloration. She is a beautiful German five piece composition doll with a bisque head from a short-lived German company. She will travel securely to her new home with her doll stand and her head stuffed with tissue to protect the sleep eye mechanism.
