The company was founded around 1910 and started producing dolls in 1912. At this time, doll makers had begun using composition to produce their dolls, so Effanbee became a leader in the composition doll market. They became well known for being the first to produce a realistically proportioned child doll named Patsy, they created companion dolls, a large wardrobe and her own fan club reportedly with 275,000 members. F & B also created the first hard rubber, drink and wet doll named Dy-Dee Baby. Effanbee started producing limited edition dolls in 1975. The Effanbee Limited Edition Doll Club introduced a new doll each year and the limited edition doll was issued in 1986. The Storybook Play-Size series was made between 1975 and 1976 only. After Effanbee went into bankruptcy, Tonner Dolls, a doll distribution company, purchased its assets in 2002. Tonner revitalised the company and focused on producing high-quality reproduction dolls. In 2008, Effanbee began producing Betsy McCall dolls.
